Caring for a fresh piercing

A few simple, consistently followed rules help support healing and avoid unnecessary complications.

Cleaning routine

  1. Use sterile isotonic 0.9% saline from a pharmacy. A spray is easy to apply and keep clean.
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the area.
  3. Apply saline and gently remove build-up with sterile gauze.
  4. Pat with clean gauze to remove excess moisture.

Frequency: clean the area at least twice daily for a minimum of one month, or follow the instructions provided by your piercer.

What to avoid

  • Direct pressure and sleeping on the piercing.
  • Headphones or accessories that touch and irritate the area.
  • Touching with unwashed hands.
  • Make-up and skincare products applied close to the piercing.
  • Knocks, snagging and repeated friction.
  • Beaches, pools and the sea for the period recommended by your piercer, especially for body piercings.

What not to use

  • Betadine or rubbing alcohol.
  • Creams or topical antibiotics not recommended by a medical professional.
  • Homemade salt water.
  • Other irritating substances or fragranced products.

Useful recommendations

  • Carefully check that threaded jewellery parts are secure, without rotating the piercing during cleaning.
  • For an ear piercing, a travel pillow may reduce pressure while sleeping.
  • Do not rush to change jewellery. Speak to your piercer first.

Keep in mind: healing takes time and varies by placement. Continue your routine even when the outside looks healed.
